How to Slow Down YouTube Music for Practice
March 16, 2026 • 5 min read
A fast guitar solo, a complex drum fill, a rapid piano passage — these sound like blur at normal speed. But slow it down and you can see every detail. Here is how to use YouTube playback speed for effective practice.
YouTube Built-in Speed Control
Click the Settings gear icon below the video, select Playback speed, and choose your speed. Options range from 0.25x to 2x.
Using Speed with Looping
Speed control works best combined with A-B looping:
- Set your A-B loop points around the passage
- Set speed to 0.5x
- Practice until clean
- Increase speed gradually
Speed Progression Method
Do not jump straight to full speed. Follow this progression:
- 0.5x — Learn the notes, fingerings, movements
- 0.6x — Add nuance and dynamics
- 0.75x — Connect passages smoothly
- 0.85x — Refine timing and feel
- 1.0x — Full speed performance
